Plans for new sport and leisure facilities will go out to public consultation at the end of June.
Spelthorne Borough Council is proposing to develop a new leisure centre and sports pitches in Staines-upon-Thames. This follows extensive research and consultation with users, sports groups, and Sport England, which explored the changing needs of the people in the Borough.
Cllr Ian Harvey, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, explained, "The existing leisure centre has been well used over the years, but customers' leisure requirements have changed over time and so it is not ideally suited to meet future needs. Not only are maintenance costs rising but the existing leisure centre cannot incorporate the wide range of facilities required by today's health-conscious society."
He added, "We have launched an extensive public consultation, which will ensure the views of the wider community, as well as users and other stakeholders, can be used to help inform the designs from the outset."
Beginning with a two-day drop-in event at the current Spelthorne Leisure Centre on Friday 29 June and Saturday 30 June, the first phase of the consultation will continue until Monday 23 July, which is the deadline for returning the questionnaire. The questionnaire can be returned either online or by post, email or in a post box that will be left at the current leisure centre.
Cllr Maureen Attewell, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing said: "We really hope that people will share their comments and suggestions. Members of the project team will be on hand to answer people's questions and provide information."
The drop-in sessions are on:
- Friday 29 June: 11am - 6.30pm.
- Saturday 30 June: 10am - 4.30pm.
The online questionnaire will be available on the project website www.spelthorneleisure.info from Friday 29 June until Monday 23 July.
