A Surrey MP has said banning Donald Trump from the UK would be a "spectacular own goal" during a debate at Westminster.
Spelthorne's Kwasi Kwarteng said the ban would do nothing but "boost" the US presidential candidate's campaign through publicity and the patriotism of American citizens.
The debate was held in the Westminster Hall after a 500,000-strong petition was submitted calling for Trump to be banned from the UK after he said he wanted all Muslims banned from the US.
Speaking around three hours into the debate, Mr Kwarteng highlighted it was in fact Martin Luther King Day and the banning of particular races was part of American history.
He said: "I think if Martin Luther King were here today he would be very surprised at some of the sugar coated American history that there has been on display today.
"I hate to say this but what Trump has proposed has been proposed many times in American legislation.
"The outright ban of people on the base of race or colour or ethnicity is regrettably something that has often happened in American history.
"We can object to this and say its is evil, terrible and bad but this is no grounds to ban a presidential candidate."
If the UK were to ban Donald Trump from coming to Britain, that would be the biggest boost to his campaign in America that we could possibly give in terms of publicity, in terms of patriotism this would be a spectacular own goal."
