The Benwell Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames has bagged £1,300 from Tesco's Bags of Help community grant scheme
Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.
The Centre applied for funding to help it create a gardening club for its members and residents of the attached Mitchison Court. The money will be used for all the essential items needed to get the garden up and running including tools, plants, seeds, bulbs and a greenhouse.
Voting took place in Tesco stores throughout September and October with customers choosing which local project they would like to get an award using a token given to them at the checkout. The Benwell gardening project came second and will receive an award of £1,300.
Cllr Maureen Attewell, Spelthorne Council's Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: "Thanks very much to Tesco for this grant. Creating and maintaining a garden is a lovely social activity and I'm sure everyone who takes part will benefit greatly from the sense of teamwork, and visitors will enjoy the results."
Alec Brown, Tesco's Head of Community, said: "Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we've been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It's such a special scheme because it's local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can't wait to see the projects come to life."
